I signed up for a free account on zoosk with the intention of hooking up with people, as my phone is old and not capable of running any hook-up aps (e.g. tinder etc). I used to have an account on Plenty of Fish and OKCupid but it was a few years ago now and I was after a serious partner then. Not only would these sites not let me create new accounts, I wanted to be a bit more anonymous this time round and all my 'old' matches, some of which were still there, kept showing up, so I tried zoosk.

I started off with a small blurb about myself and no profile photo because I wanted to be fairly anonymous until I saw someone I liked, then I figured I could just send them a photo of myself. There is no problem with sending photos on POF or OKC. I live in a small town with a pretty high public job and don't want everyone seeing who I am. I am female too by the way.

So I got a message from someone, but couldn't reply to them without a subscription, so I thought 'ok, why not' and subscribed. It said it was on auto renewal basis and charged me $42 (advertised at $9.95 per month for 3 months...go figure). I then went to reply to the message, which asked to see a photo of myself and seemed fairly genuine, but it wouldn't let me reply without a profile photo. I was getting a bit annoyed so I just got a photo of myself standing a fair way off into the distance. When I replied explaining why I hadn't added a photo, I saw that Zoosk had blown the photo right up. So I removed it and added a random beach photo I'd taken, then after a while....Zoosk took that one down and said I needed to add a proper one of me.

I understand Zoosk wants people to have genuine photos of themselves because there are a lot of scammers out there, but there are genuine people too like me who just want their privacy and don't want every person from their hometown seeing their - pretty recognizable - photo on a dating site!

Immediately after adding the photo of the beach as my profile pic, someone else sent me a message saying 'hi' but when I viewed their profile, they had a number of photos of various different people and had a pretty weird name that made no sense.

I went to unsubscribe which took ages, and it asked why. I said I was unhappy with the price, so it offered me all these other discount prices (why don't they offer these straight up?), then it just put my profile into temporary shut down mode and said it would cancel my account in 3 months time.

I wasn't happy...I wanted my profile and everything cancelled now, so I did the unsubscribe thing again, this time saying that I had met someone on zoosk and that's why I was leaving. I picked the robot who had said hi to me as my partner, and it shut down my account straight up!

Don't use this site. hidden charges, auto renewals and it controls your profile. You're lured in to thinking it's all free then people send you messages and you can't reply to them.

Reason of review: Not as described/ advertised.

Zoosk Pros: Site itself was ok.

Zoosk Cons: Hidden costs.

Location: Melbourne, Victoria
